The Calm Before Sandy

It was strangely mild in NYC and across the river in Edgewater, NJ on Saturday and Sunday before Hurricane Sandy hit.  The weather was unseasonably warm, not a drop of rain fell, and aside from the occasional gust of wind on Sunday, the air was pretty still.  I wonder if this is what people mean by “the calm before the storm.”  There weren’t even many people out and about in the usually harried city streets.

As the 1,000-mile wide superstorm neared, my friend and I decided to make the most of the days leading up to its arrival, and embarked on an eating tour with some of her pals. Here’s a nod to one aspect of NYC/NJ that makes the area great, and to its resilient spirit that will undoubtedly surface as it picks itself up after the storm.

    • Thanks, Sam! I’m so excited to have you as a food blog friend too. Yes! I was down in NY Saturday (actually visiting a friend in Edgewater, who brought me into the city for the day), and was supposed to head farther down to Princeton afterwards, but plans changed pretty quickly. I’ll have to finish the trip another time…maybe we can meet up? :)

I use either my ancient Casio Exilim-Z75 point-and-shoot (it was/is my very first camera right out of college!), or my parents’ Canon point-and-shoot (don’t know the model) if I can get my paws on it.

      • Yes! come again soon and we’ll meet up! I love Princeton, there is a great little spice shop there called Savory. Meanwhile I’ll be following your blog :) Your photos are great!

        • I’ll check in with you! Ooo, I just looked up Savory – definitely stopping by if I get the chance. Sometimes I get carried away with pictures; I’m glad someone else besides me likes them! I added cream to something the other day, and as it transformed, I thought of your penne vodka post :)
